FELLOWS, CLASS OF 2012

Patrycja Ajdukiewicz, Baruch College
A first-year student at Baruch College, Patrycja Ajdukiewicz is majoring in Public Affairs with an interdisciplinary minor combining NYC Studies, French and Photography. She emigrated from her native Poland only five years ago. Patrycja has explored her interest in social activism as a volunteer at a Native American Navajo reservation in Arizona where she assisted in the building of a playground for children of single mothers. Later, she worked with the Social Activism program at the Museum of Modern Art. She is currently a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Patrycia is an avid Francophile, and spent a year studying at Lycée Charles de Gaulle in Paris in 2008-09. In addition to French, she is also fluent in Polish and Spanish. For her first Watson summer she interned at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
MaryBeth Apriceno, John Jay College of Criminal Justice
MaryBeth Apriceno is a second year student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice considering majors in forensic psychology, criminology, sociology, English, and/or Spanish. Her wide array of interests include sports, drama, and photography. She also has extensive experience as a community service volunteer. She played varsity softball and volleyball in high school, was a member of the drama and photography clubs, and organized social events for her school. As a volunteer she has worked with New York Cares Coat Drive, Operation Christmas Child, and Project Hospitality Holiday Food Drives. She has also served as a guide or representative for a wide variety of school events. A member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society, she is in the Honors Program at John Jay. Echoing Green hosted MaryBeth during her first Watson summer.
Anne Boatner, Brooklyn College
Anne Boatner grew up in Tennessee. She has strong interests in both political science and journalism. A second year student at Brooklyn College, Anne has a consuming passion about coffee and its impact as a world commodity. She has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Amnesty International; has worked with a community garden; and has led workshops for high school students on the importance of sexual consent. She was also a founding organizer of the Brooklyn College Coffee Collective whose aim is to broaden understanding of the connections between coffee and the global economy, and to serve high-quality, ethically traded coffee on the Brooklyn campus. Anne interned at the New-York Historical Society this summer.
David Bonilla, Hunter College
David Bonilla came from Colombia to New York to study at Hunter College where he is a second-year student. A political science major, he spent a year studying language and socio-cultural studies at the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. A native Spanish speaker, David has offered his assistance to adult language learners as a grammar and conversation teacher. He also shares his athletic skills as a recreation assistant at the Keith Williams Recreation Center in Queens. By teaching children soccer and other sports, David works to instill a stronger sense of teamwork among them. As a high school student in Bogotá, he excelled in student government and was on the winning team of the national high school "philosophy olympics." The Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund is where David interned during this first summer.
Sophia Eilbacher, Pace University
A first year student majoring in English at Pace University, Sophia Eilbacher's extracurricular activities span from practicing Brazilian Jujitsu to the creative arts. In high school in Brick Church, NJ she was president of the Art Club and the creative director of her high school literary magazine. Her athletic interests include cross country running, track and field events. She holds a third degree brown belt and is the captain of her Judo club. She was also a member of the National Honor Society. Sophia has participated in a wide variety of volunteer activities such as painting elementary schools, organizing fundraisers and working in soup kitchens. Sophia was a summer teaching Fellow in the Bronx Zoo Education Department, a part of the Wildlife Conservation Society, during her first Watson summer.
Irvin Ibarguen, College of Staten Island
Irvin Ibarguen is in his second year at the College of Staten Island where he is majoring in Marketing and Economics with a minor in History. He is currently an active member of the Verrazano School Student Board, and organizes events to foster a sense of community among students. An accomplished writer, Irvin is a recipient of a Gold Key Scholastic Art and Writing Award, and was awarded an honorable mention for memoirs in the Random House Creative Writing Competition. The son of Mexican immigrants, he has mentored two undocumented Mexican young men whom he met playing soccer several years ago. He has had multiple internship experiences, serving as an administrative assistant at the Northfield Local Community Development Corporation in Staten Island, and working as a marketing Intern at Simon and Schuster in their Audio Department. For his first summer, Irvin interned for the Global Scholarship Program of the Institute of International Education.
Sabina Ibarrola, Hunter College
Sabina Ibarrola came from Florida to New York to study at Hunter College where she is a second year student majoring in performance and gender and social change. As an active member and former president of her high school Amnesty International Club, Sabina organized demonstrations and events in an effort to raise student consciousness of human rights injustices around the world. She has performed various dances including bellydancing and West African dance, and has instructed young children in dance and creative movement. Sabina is also musically talented, having majored in viola at the A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts. She has spent the last four summers lifeguarding and teaching swimming and water fitness at the Wellington Aquatics Center. Sabina interened in the Education Department at the Studio Museum in Harlem for her first Watson summer internship
Erica Jackson, Marymount Manhattan College
Erica Jackson is considering careers as a museum curator, a journalist, or a writer. An art history major with a minor in English at Marymount Manhattan College, she is in her second year. The recipient of a scholarship for academic excellence, and a Deans List student, Erica is an accomplished writer. She won an award as a playwright and writing for the newspaper at her high school Maryland. In high school she was both on the varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squad. Last summer, Erica interned at the Library of Congress assisting in a project involving the papers of Vladimir Nabokov. The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs hosted Erica during her first Watson summer.
Renelle Lawrence, Baruch College
Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Renelle Lawrence is a second-year student at the Macaulay Honors College at Baruch College. She is pursuing a degree in psychology with a double minor in Japanese and interdisciplinary New York studies. Renelle has volunteered her time to assist children improve literacy through the Book Buddies program at her local library, the Change for Kids program at P.S. 160 and as a tutor at the Champion Learning Center. She has also worked with the Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Program in New York City teaching healthy eating and exercise habits. Active in community service, Renelle has also participated in the Lend-A-Hand program and It’s My Park Day. She has honed her skills in leadership and organization as a stage manager for productions from plays and musicals to fashion shows and concerts. Renelle engaged in a research project at the Beth Israel Cancer Center during her first summer.
Adela Ruiz, Saint John's University
Adela Ruiz was born in the Dominican Republic. She is a first year student at Saint John's University, and is planning to major in anthropology. She is considering several career options: social worker, lawyer, counselor, or teacher. She participated in project to refurbish an old church in Detroit for use as a soup kitchen and clothes drive location. Dedicated to service, Adela works as a wellness peer educator. She has tutored elementary school students, volunteered at a nursing home, and acted as a church retreat leader. Adela is fluent in Spanish, and has been awarded the National Spanish Examinations Gold Award as well earned the Tri-City 3rd Place Award in the level 4 bilingual category. Year Up New York hosted Adela for her first Watson summer.
Lauren Smyth, Saint John's University
Lauren Smyth comes from Skokie, Illinois and is studying at Saint John's University planning to major in anthropology. A first-year student with interests in architecture, curatorial work in museums, anthropology, and languages, she is a Saint John's Presidential Scholar and honor roll student. Lauren is an accomplished French horn player, having held the position of 1st chair in multiple ensembles. In addition, she is also a versatile athlete competing in soccer, basketball and swimming. Lauren was named the 2009 Senior Athlete of the Year and given the District 219 Superstar Award for Athletics and Activities. Her volunteer experience includes refereeing for the American Youth Soccer Organization, tutoring high school students in literacy and working for the Coalition of Concerned Legal Professionals. The Publications Office of the Rubin Museum of Art , is where Lauren worked during her first summer.
Amire Solomon, Long Island University's
Amire Solomon is a second year student at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus and is planning to major both in English and accounting. He has worked with the MTA Arts for Transit-Music Under New York program where he traveled to various locations to monitor the program's musicians. A bass player, his interest in music is both professional and personal. Amire has also acted as a docent for the New York Transit Museum and as a teen counselor for his vacation bible school. His most noted achievement, however, is athletic. He is the co-captain for the LIU track and field team and holds a high school record in the triple jump. Amire interened with the Opera workshop at the Arroyo Foundation this summer.
Ethan Taylor, Pace University
Ethan Taylor attended high school in Stroudsburg, PA. Now in his second year at the Pace University's Pforzheimer Honors College, he will major in political science. His career interests included government service, diplomacy, law enforcement, and intelligence work. He is a consultant for the Pace Writing Center where he assists students with their work, creates tutoring materials and helps to market the program to Pace students. Working with data and statistics, Ethan helped Sanctuary for Families compile information to assist with NY state legislation against domestic violence. He has been a participant in the Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship, a member of the Society of Dyson Fellows and of the Pace Sophomore Honors Society. In his free time he enjoys golfing and was a member of his high school golf team. The New York city on-line newspaper, the Gotham Gazette, hosted Ethan for his first summer.
Tenyse Williams, Long Island University
Majoring in journalism Tenyse Williams is a second year student at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University. When she isn’t working on her courses, she works as an intern with NY1, New York’s local news television station, conducting interviews, operating cameras and editing news content. She is the host of a weekly television program for LIU called “Live with Tenyse Williams” as well as a weekly evening radio show called “The J Spot” for WLIU-BK. Tenyse is an avid lacrosse player and organized a lacrosse program for girls ages 12 – 16 in Bedford Stuyvesant. She has also volunteered for Sancofa, a program focused on assisting homeless teenagers. Tenyse's interest in mentoring were perfectly suited to her first Watson internship at IMentor, during her first Watson summer.
Peter Xu, Queens College
Peter Xu is a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School where he developed his strong interest in science. A first year student at Queens College, he plans to major in physics. A speaker both of Cantonese and Mandarin, his interests extend from playing the clarinet to breakdancing. He is also dedicated to service, having volunteered in the admissions department of a local hospital, and tended to residents' needs in the Greenpark Care Nursing Home. Peter's interest in environmental issues has led him to participate with the New York Public Interest Research Group where he has organized campus events to promote green initiatives, worked with 350.org to urge policy makers to create stronger climate change initiatives and lobbied for enforcement of current environmental policies. For his first Watson summer, Peter is interning at Global Kids.

Tyler Alterman, Hunter College
A fourth year student at Hunter College, Tyler Alterman is pursuing a major in media studies and is interested in becoming a creative director. He is a Hunter Undergraduate Student Government senator and a representative at the Macaulay Honors College University Scholars Council. Tyler also does freelance graphic design for the Women’s Rights Coalition, The Greener Apple Sustainability Blog, and the Roosevelt Institution. In high school, Tyler was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of a humor magazine, The Scallion. He is an Eagle Scout with a dedication to community service, and he has interests in a variety of arts including writing, composing, and visual design. For his first summer, he interned at DonorsChoose. He spent his second Watson summer at a public relations firm, CooperKatz.
Caroline Craig, Pace University
Caroline Craig is a third year student at Pace University, where she has plans to major in environmental studies and minor in political science. She has worked for the Lower East Side Ecology Center and The Fund for Public Interest, for which she solicited donations and memberships for Environment NY. In high school, she was president of several clubs including the Environmental Club, the Human Rights Club, and the Photography club. She also played JV softball and volunteered for community service in New Orleans, West Virginia, the Bronx, and her hometown, Carmel, NY. During the summer of 2008, she travelled through Western Europe, and for her first Watson summer, she worked with the Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo. Her second internship was with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
Damala Denny, Long Island University
A Brooklyn native, Damala Denny is a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, where she was part of the Student Government Organization, founder and President of the Double-Dutch Club, and a participant on a debate team. She is currently a third year student at Long Island University, where she is interested in studying English and political science in pursuit of a career in law. Damala is a volunteer at a soup kitchen in Brooklyn, as well as the Cobble Hill Senior Citizens’ Home. In the past, she has worked for the Blue Ridge Firm and at Cleary Gottlieb, Steen, & Hamilton. For her first Watson summer, she interned at The Studio Museum of Harlem. She spent her second summer at the Brennan Center for Justice.
Javeria Hashmi, Brooklyn College
Born in Pakistan and raised in New York City, Javeria Hashmi graduated from Edward R. Murrow High School and is now a fourth year student a Brooklyn College. Javeria is interested in a career as an immigration attorney or high school teacher, and as such, she is pursuing a double major in political science and education. In high school, Javeria was involved with the Council for Unity club which emphasized diversity, and raised money for Darfur, Toys for Tots, and Homeless shelters. Javeria was a member of SING!, for which she designed and made costumes for its annual musical, and she competed in a high school level mock trial in Moot Court. Two summers ago, Javeria studied abroad in Istanbul. Her first Watson internship was with the IIE Global Leaders Program. She interned at the law firm of Hughes, Hubbard & Reed LLP during her second summer.
Jocelyne Jeannot, Lehman College
Jocelyne Jeannot is a fourth year student at Lehman College, where she is studying political science and mass communications. For the past two years, Jocelyne has participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and she has been a volunteer for New York Cares since 2004. Jocelyne is also the three-time winner of the Tavern on the Green Annual Hat Competition, for which she designs and makes her own elaborate and artistic hats. She is a Lehman College Representative of the Macaulay Honors College University Scholars Council, and a student communications Intern at the Honors College, for which she organizes and advertises a variety of cross-campus events. She is a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in New York. For her first Watson summer, she interned at the Central Park Conservancy. She worked at the Conference Board for her second summer.
Alex Kane, Marymount Manhattan College
Alex Kane has interests in journalism, activism, and civil rights law, and he is currently studying political science, international studies, and sociology as a fourth year student at Marymount Manhattan College. Alex is a member of the Indymedia U.S. editorial collective, as well as the web administrator of nyc.indymedia.org, and a reporter, writer, blogger, and volunteer for the Indypendent, a New York City-based newspaper. He has volunteered with Food Not Bombs, taught as a substitute teacher at Battery Park City Day Nursery, and worked in nursery care at Trinity Church on Wall Street. At Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, New York, Alex was President of Students United for Cultural Awareness. In 2008, he traveled to Denver to report on protests surrounding the Democratic National Convention, and for his first Watson summer, he interned at the Gotham Gazette. He interned at Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting during his second summer.
Brian Kateman, College of Staten Island
A fourth year student at the College of Staten Island, Brian Kateman is studying biology and psychology, with aspirations to be a professor, a psychologist, or a conservation biologist. Brian is a Macaulay Honors College Ambassador, a teaching volunteer at the American Museum of Natural History, a Macaulay Honors College biology tutor, a Macaulay Honors College Outward Bound Orientation Group Leader, a food pantry volunteer at Project Hospitality, and a peer educator at the College of Staten Island Wellness and Health Center. In the summer of 2008, Brian volunteered as a teacher and guidance counselor assistant at Lillian Raskins High School. He interned at Echoing Green for his first Watson summer. His second summer took him to an internship at the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation at Columbia University.
William Leverett, Queens College
William Leverett is a current third year student at Queens College with an interest in international studies, urban studies, and political science. William is also interested in music and composition and is a member of the Queens College Wind Ensemble. He is a church youth usher and lay reader at St. Albans Congregational Church and a member of the Queens College Black Student Union. William currently works as an Office Assistant at the Center for Preparatory Studies in Music at Queens College. He is an Eagle Scout and is interested in possible careers as a musician, a composer, a political representative, or a teacher. William interned at the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development during his first Watson summer. He interned with YearUp New York for his second. He deferred his third summer to take up a Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship in Washington, DC in the Summer of 2010.
Michael Maslankowski, College of Staten Island
Michael Maslankowski has strong interests in film and writing. He is a cinema studies and English double major at the College of Staten Island, where he is currently a fourth year student. Outside of his academic work, Michael is a College of Staten Island orientation leader, and a CSI student mentor for the Office of New Student Orientation/CLUE/Pluralism & Diversity. Michael is also an Adult Day Service student mentor for the Melissa Riggio Higher Education Program. In pursuit of his film interests, Michael was the production assistant for the independent documentary, “To A Man,” sponsored by the Council of Arts and Humanities for Staten Island. Michael worked at the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs for his first Watson summer. During his second summer, he worked at the development office of Channel Thirteen/WNET.
Peter Michalakis, Hunter College
Having grown up in Brooklyn, Peter Michalakis graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before enrolling at Hunter College, where he is a third year student pursuing possible majors in political science or journalism. Peter is also interested in computer science and basketball, and has participated in various local basketball tournaments and leagues, including the JCH Intramural League, the Leif Ericsson Summer League, and the Regina Poris Open. Since 2005, he has worked as a Parts Consultant at Bay Ridge Service Honda and Volvo. Peter aspires to possible careers in broadcast journalism, politics, investigative reporting, and law. He spent his first Watson summer interning at Scenarios USA. He interned with Justice Yates at the New York State Supreme Court for his second summer. He deferred his final Watson summer until 2011.
Christine Pigott, Brooklyn College
Christine Pigott is a fourth year student at Brooklyn College, where she is pursuing a double major in computer science and television & radio. She aspires to be a director/producer of film, an entrepreneur, or an FBI agent. In high school, Christine participated in SING, the Stepping for the Step team, and the poetry club as an editor. Currently, Christine is a black belt student and instructor of Ronin Shotokan Karate, a musician in a steel band, and a member of the Brooklyn College Television Club, Chess Club, NBSSO, and CSU. She is also the events coordinator for the Academic Club Association, and an Ambassador for the Bridges to Computing program. For her first Watson summer, she interned at the Rubin Museum of Art. She worked at the Office of City Council Member Leroy Comrie during her second summer.
Lorendra Pinder, Pace University
A fourth year student at Pace University, Lorendra Pinder is pursuing possible majors in English literature, women and gender studies, and political science, with an interest in a possible career in international and human rights law or international journalism. Lorendra is a writer and editor of Pace’s literary magazine, Aphros, a debater with Model United Nations, and an Orientation Leader during freshman and transfer orientations. She is also a tutor at the Writing Center and volunteers as a reading, English, and GED instructor at The Door, a youth community center. In the summer of 2008 she traveled to Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa with a Pace University political science class, and for her first Watson summer she worked with Ford Motor Company’s International Fellowship at the 92nd Street Y. For her second Watson summer, she interned with the Gay Men's Health Crisis during her second summer.
Eric Polanco, The City College of New York
Eric Polanco is a third year student at The City College of New York, where he is interested in studying media and communication arts and creative writing in pursuit of a variety of possible careers including screenwriting, film directing, video editing, journalism, education, and politics. In his high school, Eric founded and led a poetry club which published the poetry of his peers. He also filmed and edited a documentary about the Highbridge, and tutored his peers in English and Spanish. Eric was the valedictorian of his class at C.A.R.E.S. high school. He spent his first Watson summer interning with Scenarios USA. He deferred his second Watson summer until 2011.
Ilya Ryvin, Brooklyn College
A film production major with interests in anthropology and archaeology, Ilya Ryvin aspires to be a director, editor, producer, and educator. He is currently a fourth year student at Brooklyn College. A graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, Ilya has been a member of Key Club International, Progressive Student Awareness group, and Future Business Leaders of America, of which he was also a founder. Ilya has written several screenplays and was once cast as an extra for the television show, “Fringe.” In the summer of 2008, Ilya volunteered at SLQC Diagnostic and Treatment Center, and for his first Watson summer, he worked with the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. He worked in the chambers of Judge Bonnie Wittner at the New York State Supreme Court during his second summer.
Bing Shao, The City College of New York
Bing Shao is pursuing a double major in Biology and English at The City College of New York. She is interested in exploring possible careers as a writer, doctor, teacher, psychologist, and singing instructor. In her time as an undergraduate, Bing has been a workshop leader for the General Chemistry sequence at CCNY, Vice-President of Sustainable CCNY, mentor of the Science Club, volunteer in Costa Rica during the winter of 2008, a Cook at Siu’s Chinese Restaurant, volunteer at KittyKind Shelter, and volunteer for New York Cares. In high school, she was President of the PreMed Club, captain of the Animal Room, writer for Biology Journal, research Assistant at Weill Medical College, and founder of the Helping Hand Food Distribution Organization in Harlem. Bing worked with Global Kids during her first Watson summer. For her second summer, she worked at the constituency Office of Congressman José Serrano.
Sushanta Singha, Lehman College
Sushanta Singha is a third year economics and political science major at Lehman College. Born in Bangladesh and graduate of Manhattan Center for Science and Math, Sushanta has strong interests in both the sciences and the arts. At Lehman, he was the freshman class representative of the Macaulay Honors College University Scholars Council, and also a participant of the Capoeira Club. In high school, Sushanta was captain of his cross country, indoor, and outdoor track teams, and a member of the Desi Club. He volunteered with organizations like Special Olympics and Top Soccer, and also serviced the Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple. For his first Watson summer, he interned at IIE Scholar Rescue Fund. His second summer he interned at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.
Julianne Willis, Marymount Manhattan College
Julianne Willis is interested in studying political science and international studies at Marymount Manhattan College, in pursuit of a career as a human rights lawyer or women’s rights lawyer and advocate against domestic violence. Prior to her time at Marymount Manhattan, Julianne was a student at Kingsborough Community College, where she served as the Student World Assembly Chapter President and organized many campus-wide activities including a Campus Clean-Up, an Eyes Wide Open event, and a Women-for-Women International Used Book Sale. Julianne also initiated and led a semester-long “Campaign Against Poverty,” and served as a student mentor for fellow students. During the summer of 2008, Julianne attended the Long Island University Global College Summer Program in Costa Rica, and for her first Watson summer, she worked for the Scholars at Risk Network. She worked at the law firm of Hughes, Hubbard & Reed LLP during her second summer.
