FELLOWS, CLASS OF 2010

Eileen DeLeon, The City College of New York
Eileen DeLeon is a second year student at The City College of New York. She is an English major and is working towards a career in the publishing industry. Eileen is Editor of The Campus, the website coordinator of Relay for Life of City College, and a member of the CCNY Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, an International English Honor Society. She is also a Writing Consultant at the CCNY Writing Center. In the past, Eileen has volunteered at community service organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Hope Kitchen at St. Gabriel’s Church, and Midnight Run. For her first Watson summer, Eileen is interning at Echoing Green, an organization that provides seed money to social entrepreneurs.
Joseph Eastman, Hunter College
A second year student at Hunter College and CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College, Joseph Eastman is pursuing a double major in political science and economics and is interested in public service, government, and law. In 2007, he interned for Congressman Weiner’s District Office, and he is currently a New York Office Intern for the New York State Democratic Committee. Joseph is the Founder, President, and Administrative Director of the Roosevelt Institution at Hunter College. He is the Treasurer of the United Nations Student Association / Model United Nations Debate Team, the Secretary of the Student Political Science Association, a Student Senator, and a member of the Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee. This summer, Joseph is interning at the New York City Department of Parks.
Herby Jeanty, Pace University
Born in Haiti, Herby Jeanty is a second year student at Pace University with a major in biology. From 2003 to 2006, Herby was a Food Service Specialist in the United States Marine Corps. His military awards include the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and a Combat Action Ribbon. Herby is a member of the Tribeta Honor Society, the Pace Pre-Medical Organization, the Caribbean Students Association, and the Haitian Students Association. After college, Herby plans to attend medical school and become an orthopedic surgeon. He is spending his first Watson summer as an intern at Beth Israel Cancer Center.
William Leverett, Queens College
William Leverett is a current first year student at Queens College with an interest in international studies, urban studies, and political science. Mr. Leverett is also interested in music and composition and is a member of the Queens College Wind Ensemble. He is a church youth usher and lay reader at St. Albans Congregational Church and a member of the Queens College Black Student Union. Mr. Leverett currently works as an Office Assistant at the Center for Preparatory Studies in Music at Queens College. He is an Eagle Scout and is interested in possible careers as a musician, a composer, a political representative, or a teacher. Mr. Leverett is interning at the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development during his first Watson summer.
Jeffrey Lewis, Marymount Manhattan College
Jeffrey Lewis is a second year student at Marymount Manhattan College, with a major in communications and minors in photography and graphic design. He is a slam poet and has competed with great success in the Annual Chicago Teen Poetry Slam and the Annual National Poetry Slam in both 2004 and 2005. At Marymount, Jeffrey is an Institutional Advancement Phone-a-thon Coordinator, an Orientation Leader, a Peer Mentor, the Design Editor of The C Magazine, an Admission’s Assistant, and the Layout Artist and Designer of The Marymount Manhattan Review. Last summer, he worked at The University of Chicago’s John Crerar Library. During his first Watson summer, Jeffrey is a business development intern at the Central Park Conservancy.
Marina Malomud, Brooklyn College
Born in Kharkov, Ukraine, Marina Malomud graduated from Midwood High School in Brooklyn, and is now a second year student at Brooklyn College. She is planning to major in economics. In the past, Marina has interned at Maimonides Hospital, been a private tutor of mathematics, English, creative writing, and physics, volunteered as a Patient Aide at DaVita Inc., and taught SAT preparation for The Princeton Review. This past winter, she studied the Spanish language at Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata in Argentina. Marina aspires to a career in economic public policy, law, or acadamia. She is interning at The Conference Board for her first Watson summer.
Peter Michalakis, Hunter College
Having grown up in Brooklyn, Peter Michalakis graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before enrolling at Hunter College, where he is a first year student pursuing possible majors in political science or journalism. Peter is also interested in computer science and basketball, and has participated in various local basketball tournaments and leagues, including the JCH Intramural League, the Leif Ericsson Summer League, and the Regina Poris Open. Since 2005, he has worked as a Parts Consultant at Bay Ridge Service Honda and Volvo. Peter aspires to possible careers in broadcast journalism, politics, investigative reporting, and law. He is spending his first Watson summer interning at Scenarios USA.
Alexa Mieses, The City College of New York
Alexa Mieses has strong interests in the sciences, with a planned major in biology and minor in psychology and aspirations for a career as a physician with a focus on public heath. She is currently a second year student at The City College of New York. Alexa is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and she is affiliated with the Minority Association for Pre-health Students and the Student National Medical Association. She is also a former competitive tap dancer. Alexa is employed by the City College Academy for Professional Preparation and by the Champion Learning Center, and she volunteers for Dr. Jennifer Walden, M.D. For her first Watson summer, she is interning at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s summer program for children at the Bronx Zoo.
Sasha Paulino, College of Mount Saint Vincent
Sasha Paulino is currently a second year student at College of Mount Saint Vincent, pursuing a double major in history and education. She has worked as an art teacher for the Jewish Community Center’s enrichment program in Scarsdale, as a head counselor at the Children’s Aid Society Wagon Road Day Camp in Chappaqua, and as an intern with Jacobi Medical Center. Sasha has volunteered at Midnight Run in the Bronx and at the YMCA of the Greater New York as a Youth Counselor. She is interested in a career as an elementary school teacher, a social studies professor, or an art teacher. Sasha is spending her first Watson summer interning at the New-York Historical Society.
Blaire Porter, Long Island University
Born in Seattle, Blaire Porter is a second year student at Long Island University, pursuing possible majors in psychology, history, and/or education. Since the fall of 2006, she has been a pitcher for the Long Island University softball team, and as a freshman, she was the second-team pitcher in the Northeastern conference. Every week, Blaire volunteers to talk with and care for a Holocaust survivor. During the past three summers, she has also volunteered at the R.O.O.T.S. Homeless Shelter in Seattle, Washington, where she prepared and served food to the homeless. For her first Watson Summer, Blaire is interning at the Facing History School.
Rosemary Taveras, Brooklyn College
Rosemary Taveras is pursuing a major in psychology and is interested in a possible career as a high school guidance counselor. A second year student at Brooklyn College, she is active as a member of the Campus Ministry, the Jovenes De Valor Youth Group, the Right-to-Life Club, the Spanish Club, the “Jornada de Vida Cristiana” Youth Group, the Junior/Senior Chorus, and the Sons and Daughters Encounter Youth Group. Ms. Taveras is a volunteer with the Grace House Organization. She has worked as a counselor for the Joseph P. Kennedy Center in Harlem, a receptionist for St. Elizabeth’s Parish Rectory, and a College Assistant at Brooklyn College’s Office of Communications. Ms. Taveras is interning at the Studio Museum in Harlem for her first Watson summer.
Jonathan Vazcones, Queens College
Jonathan Vazcones is a first year student at Queens College and an aspiring economics and philosophy double-major. He hopes to pursue a career as an economist working to affect and advise policy change, but his interests also include jazz music and long distance running. At Queens College, he is a member of the Political Science Club and a delegate for the Queens College United Nations Club. He is also an Advantage Coach, tutoring children at the Score! Educational Center. During his first Watson summer, Jonathan is interning at the Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund.
Olivia Anne Warren, Marymount Manhattan College
Olivia Warren was born in Racine, Wisconsin, and she is a first year student at Marymount Manhattan College pursuing possible majors in dance and political science and possible careers as a dancer, a choreographer, a politician, or a neurologist. She is a Freshman Representative on the MMC Dance Board of Representatives and a member of the MMC Residence Hall Council and the MMC Go Green Coalition. For her first Watson summer, Olivia is interning at the Gotham Gazette, a daily newspaper of the Citizen's Union.
Carla Whyte, Lehman College
Carla Whyte is currently a second year student at Lehman College. She is pursuing majors in sociology and political science with a possible minor in French. Carla is a founding member of the Black Legacy Club and a cheerleader at Lehman women's and men's basketball games and in annual CUNY-wide competitions. She is in the Lehman Scholars program and is the recipient of the Lehman College Foundation Scholarship. Carla is also a research assistant in the department of sociology and a senior page at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. Carla is spending her first Watson summer interning at the United Nations Population Fund.
Michael Young, College of Staten Island
Michael Young is a second year student at the College of Staten Island and CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College. He is pursuing a career as a writer, educator, and artist. Michael is intending to major in American studies with a minor in studio art, and on campus he is a Student Ambassador and also a Career Mentor for the Career and Scholarship Center Pathfinder Program. He created the weekly comic strips "The Flipside" and "Roommates" for the Staten Island Advance daily newspaper. Michael is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Operation Three-Legged Dolphin humor magazine. In the past, he has been an Editorial Intern for Marvel Comics and an art teacher for the Staten Island Mental Health Society. Michael is spending his first Watson summer interning at Global Kids, a program assisting urban youth to become successful students and community leaders.

Jamie-Lynn Argenta, Marymount Manhattan College
Jamie-Lynn Argetna is a senior majoring in history and political science.  She has been an active contributor to campus life at Marymount Manhattan College, serving as a peer tutor, reporter for the campus newspaper the Monitor, and chair of the Diversity Committee for the Campus Activities Board. Working as an assistant teacher at a day care center has been one of her most fulfilling experiences.  During her first summer, Jamie-Lynn interned with the International Coalition of Historic Site Museums of Conscience at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Her second Watson summer was spent as a public relations intern at the art auction house, Christie’s.  She plans a career as a district attorney or medieval scholar. Jamie-Lynn will complete her third summer with the Fellowship in 2009.
Molly Rose Avila, Hunter College
Molly Rose Avila is a senior at Hunter College with an interest in political philosophy, Russian literature, and cultural history.  Molly Rose is a Thomas Hunter Honors Scholar,  She has been Fiction editor of the Hunter Literary magazine.  In summer 2005 she was a Global Volunteer at an orphanage in Lima, Peru.  During high school, she won a theatre performance award for consistently outstanding work.  During her first summer, Molly Rose interned with the education department of the Studio Museum in Harlem.  Having spent her junior spring semester in France, Molly Rose spent her second Watson summer working the Scholars at Risk Network.  She looks forward to a career exploring connections between culture and history as a professor, writer, or human rights worker. Molly Rose will complete her third summer with the Fellowship in 2009.
Brian Bonci, Pace University
A second year undergraduate at the Pforzheimer Honors College of Pace University-Manhattan, Brian Bonci was Vice President of the Freshman Class. He intends to major in political science with a minor in Spanish. He has been an intern in the office of New York State Senate Minority Leader, Malcolm Smith. In January and February 2007, Brian worked on the special election campaign of New York State Senator Craig Johnson. During his high school years in upstate New York, he held a number of leadership positions in the 4-H Program. Brian spent his first Watson summer at the Gotham Gazette, a daily newspaper of the Citizen’s Union. He is spending his second summer interning at Gay Men's Health Crisis.
Alvin Bradbury, The City College of New York
Alvin Bradbury is a third year student at the City College of New York, majoring in international studies and political science. Alvin grew up in Jamaica, though he attended high school in Flushing, Queens, where he was actively involved in a model United Nations teams, an interest he has continued at CCNY.  He spent his first Watson summer doing research for the Scholars at Risk Network. For his second summer, he is interning at the Bronx Defenders. He plans to attend law school after his graduation and hopes to work in the field of human rights.
Alane Celeste, Long Island University
In her second year at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus, Alane Celeste hopes to major in Media Arts/Communication with a minor in Spanish. She is in the LIU Honors Program and supported both by the LIU Higher Education Opportunity Program and an LIU Incentive Scholarship Award. Having spent some of her youth in the Dominican Republic, she is bilingual in Spanish and English. Her major volunteer activity is to serve as a tutor in academic subjects to 15-18 year old in-crisis youth in Brooklyn. She aspires to a career in marketing or advertising. Alane spent her first Watson summer as an intern in the Education Department at the Studio Museum in Harlem. She is spending her second summer interning at Year Up.
Mikaela Chase, Lehman College
Mikaela Chase is a third year student at the Macaulay Honors College at Lehman College, City University of New York, with a double major in anthropology and art history. She is a member of three student government bodies at Lehman, including a position as Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee. Mikaela has worked at the NYU Millhauser Labs as a research assistant for aging and dementia. Her diverse interests have taken her to 7 countries thus far, including a summer studying in Mexico and a demonstrating position in the 2004 World Culture Open in South Korea. A Horace W. Goldsmith Scholar and National Dean's List student in 2007, Mikaela spent her first Watson summer at Rubin Museum of Art, which specializes in the art of the Himalayas. She is spending her second summer interning in External Affairs at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
Nick Copeli, Queens College
Nick Copeli is a junior and member of CUNY Macauley Honors College at Queens College. Educated first in a yeshiva, he joined an Israeli/Palestine mediation program in public high school and became interested in anthropology to understand differing perspectives on public issues.  He was also a competitive swimmer and orator for the Moot Court team, as well as a volunteer in a nursing home and soup kitchen.  In college he plans to major in anthropology as preparation for a career in medicine and public health.  For his first summer, Nick interned with Global Kids, an organization dedicated to preparing urban youth for global citizenship. Nick is the first Queens College student to be chosen to participate in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s Humanities and Medicine Program. During his second Watson summer Nick worked at DonorsChoose, an organization that brings together donors with projects to improve public education. Nick will complete his third summer with the Fellowship in 2009.
Aaron Gavin, Brooklyn College
A third year student at Brooklyn College, Aaron Gavin is planning a double major in political science and in the philosophy of law. Aaron has worked for Congressman Edolphus Towns, has been a project leader at the Small Claims Action Center of New York Public Research Group, has served as Vice President of Hillel at Brooklyn College, and has been a Hebrew School Teacher and a volunteer assisting mentally disabled people. He hopes for a career in politics, law, or academic political science. Aaron spent his first summer doing research for the Scholar Rescue Fund’s World Report. For his second summer, he is interning at CooperKatz & Company, Inc.
Maria Gonzalez, Queens College
Maria Gonzalez is a third year student at Queens College majoring in history with a minor in secondary education. In high school, she was a varsity swimmer and member of the varsity track team. She also organized the first Spanish literary magazine at her high school, while participating in a number of charity activities for the March of Dimes, Relay for Life, Meals on Wheels, and others. She aspires to a career as a teacher or professor, or, possibly, a museum curator. Maria spent her first Watson summer at the New-York Historical Society. Her second summer is being spent interning with the Program Services department at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
Alexandra Gratereaux, Long Island University
Born in the Dominican Republic, Alexandra Gratereaux graduated from Miami Beach High School in Florida before enrolling at Long Island University where she is a second year student. She pursued her strong interests in journalism and photography in two internships while she was in high school as a writer-photographer at the Miami Sun Post and then as a staff photojournalist at the Miami Herald. Not surprisingly, she expects to major in print journalism and photography at LIU. Extending her interest in photojournalism to film, Alexandra spent her first Watson summer at Scenarios USA, an organization that uses writing and film-making to foster youth leadership and advocacy. She is spending her second Watson summer interning at Crain's Business Weekly.
Aniqa Islam, Queens College
Aniqa Islam, a third year student at Queens College, was born in Bangladesh. She is a graduate of Martin Van Buren High School where she was President of the Muslim Students Association. At Queens College, she is Vice President of Students for a Free Society, Co-Founder of the Coca Cola Abuses Protest Campaign, and active both in the Queens chapter of the Model United Nations and the Academic Senate. She aspires to work either at the United Nations, a non-governmental organization involved in humanitarian activities, or, perhaps, a career as a writer. Aniqa spent her first J.K. Watson summer at the United Nations Population Fund. For her second summer, she is interning at New York City Global Partners, Inc.
Ansamma James, Lehman College
A graduate of Aquinas High School in the Bronx, Ansamma James is a second year student at Lehman College, where she is President and Co-Founder of the College Students Coalition, an organization bringing Lehman students together for community service projects. “Sammy” has considerable community service experience, having volunteered at Residential Womens’ Shelter, served as a private tutor for foster children, and worked as a student counselor. She plans to major in psychology and business administration, and she hopes to found her own Charter School after college. Her first Watson summer was spent at the Beth Israel Cancer Center. She is interning at the Bronx Defenders for her second summer.
Talia Krevsky, Hunter College
Talia Krevsky is a Brooklyn native who attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School before enrolling at Hunter College and CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College where she is in her second year. She is a political activist with the Future Voters of America Party, the Social Action Club, and Undergraduate Student Government at Hunter. Her possible career interests include human rights activism, acting, journalism, or teaching. Talia spent her first Watson summer at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s summer program for children at the Bronx Zoo. She is spending her second summer interning at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Nicole Lebenson, Brooklyn College
A third year student at Brooklyn College and CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College, Nicole Lebenson is a reporter for the Brooklyn College newspaper, The Excelsior, plays in the softball club and is a member of the Honors Academy Art Committee. She is in charge of an archiving program at the Union Synagogue in Brooklyn where she is making efforts to preserve, document, collect, and exhibit documents and artifacts in the Temple’s collection. She is considering majors in English and history, with a minor in archival studies and community documentation. Nicole spent her first Watson summer working with the Ford Motor Company’s International Fellowship at the 92nd Street Y. For her second summer, she is interning at Sesame Workshop.
Anusha Mehar, College of Mount Saint Vincent
The College of Mount Saint Vincent’s first Jeannette K. Watson Fellow, Anusha Mehar is a second year student interested in international relations, English, and history. While in high school in Cornwall, New York, she helped a church providing food to homeless people, volunteered for United for Peace and Justice, and was a companion to a sick elderly woman. Before enrolling at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Anusha was a volunteer English teacher to young children in Thailand. For her first Watson summer, Anusha worked at the International Coalition of Historic Site Museums of Conscience. She is working at the Acumen Fund for her second.
Valerio Russo, Lehman College
Valerio Russo is a third year student at Lehman College and the Macaulay Honors College of CUNY. Valerio was born in Italy. He is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, where he was on the Boys Varsity Volleyball Team and Manager of the Girls Volleyball Team. He has tutored both young people and adults in Italian, computing, and algebra. Aspiring to a career in international affairs, Valerio is contemplating majoring in both political science and history. The Gotham Gazette, a daily newspaper published by the Citizens’ Union, was the site of Valerio’s first J.K. Watson summer internship. His second summer is with the New York City Department of Small Business Services.
Long Tran, Hunter College
Born in Vietnam, Long Tran graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before enrolling at Hunter where he is a third year student. He has engaged in a great deal of community service activity, including work with a physical education and recreation program for children and adults with disabilities, mentoring of after school children, and work in a soup kitchen and a nursing home. He interned with the New York Public Interest Research Group as a project leader of the environmental group, and he worked one summer for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. His career interests are in law, public policy, and politics. Long worked at Global Kids during his first Watson summer. During his second, he is interning at The Conference Board.
Lindsay White, The City College of New York
Lindsay White is a third year student at the City College of New York, and she is from Cooperstown, New York. Her experience working for two months at a residential psychiatric treatment program for children in New Hampshire and her recreation therapy volunteer work at the New York State Psychiatric Institution reflect her strong interest in clinical psychology. She also worked as an Au Pair in Sitges, Spain, while she was in high school. She is considering majors in psychology and political science and anticipates a career either in clinical psychology or social work. Lindsay’s first Watson internship was spent at the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development. For her second Watson summer, Lindsay is interning with the Public Relations department at the art auction house, Christie’s.
FELLOWS, CLASS OF 2008

Kunchok Dolma, Lehman College
Born in Nepal of Tibetan parents, Kunchok Dolma is a junior at Lehman College where she participates in the CUNY Macauley Honors College. Kunchok was educated in Nepal as a refugee from Tibet, and volunteered as a teacher prior to coming to the U.S. in 2004.  For her first summer, Kunchok interned with the United Nations Population Fund.    She spent her second Watson summer interning with Justice Yates at the New York State Supreme Court. For her third Watson summer, Kunchok will be interning at the Department of Information and International Relations of the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala, India. Her ambition is to become the first Tibetan woman Ph.D. in international law in order to serve the Tibetan community through law and non-violence.
Rony Enriquez, Long Island University
Rony Enriquez is a senior at Long Island University with interests in political science and Latin American Studies.  A graduate of Bushwick Outreach High School, Rony is deeply committed to educational opportunity.  He has registered young minorities to vote and lobbied legislators and students for educational funding.  For his first summer, Rony interned in the education department services of Broadway Housing Communities.   He spent his second Watson summer working with Justice Yates at the New York State Supreme Court. Rony is interning at Boys Hope Girls Hope in Guatemala for his third Watson summer. Rony plans a career as a professor, lawyer, politician or teacher.
Regina Gennari, Pace University
Regina Gennari is a senior at Pace University and member of the Pforzheimer Honors College with double majors in history and gender studies.  At Pace she is an officer of the Stonewall Coalition and has been an intern at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.  In high school she was captain of the debate team and led the Mock Trial team to the state championship meet.  For her first summer, Regina interned with the New York State Supreme Court. Her second Watson summer was spent at Echoing Green.   For her third summer, Regina is interning at Cambodia's Hope in Cambodia. She plans a career as a civil rights attorney.
Ron Kagan, Hunter College
Ron Kagan,a CUNY Macauley Honors College Scholar, is a senior at Hunter College.  After several years as an accomplished competitive swimmer, Ron turned to acting for a new challenge.  He graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, receiving the school’s highest distinction for acting and scholarship.  Under the guidance of the Thomas Hunter Honors Interdisciplinary Studies Program, Ron studies anthropology, classics, and philosophy.  During his first summer as a Watson Fellow, Ron interned with the City Lights Youth Theatre.  He went on to work for H.S.I, a premiere production company, before spending his second summer at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.   Ron is interning as the Assistant Director for "The Book Club Play" with the Berkshire Theatre Festval, and also as an intern with the Macaulay Honors College in Manhattan.
Rebecca Khan, Brooklyn College
Rebecca Khan is a senior at Brooklyn College majoring in English.  A student with a broad range of interests, she has been an officer in the Islamic Society at Brooklyn College and a columnist for the Excelsior student newspaper.  She has also volunteered at the Beth Israel Medical Center and helped her team to win honors in a high school Business Plan Presentation Competition.  For her first summer, Rebecca worked in the education department of the New-York Historical Society.  During her second summer, Rebecca worked at CooperKatz & Company, Inc., a small public relations firm in New York City. For her third summer, Rebecca is interning at the Ford Motor Company's International Fellowship at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan. She plans a career in teaching to fulfill her love of learning and commitment to empowering children in her community.
Maria Komartsova, The City College of New York
Maria Komartsova is a senior at the City College of New York, with interests in international studies, Jewish Studies, History and Spanish.  Dedicated to community service, she has been involved in leadership training at Shaarei Emunah to serve the Russian-Jewish community and is collaborating with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) on child advocacy.  For her first summer, Maria interned with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.   The Bronx Defenders, a not-for-profit which defends Bronx residents accused of crimes, was the site of Maria’s second Watson summer internship. For her third summer, Maria is interning at AmidEast in Tunisia. Maria is preparing for possible vocations in human rights law, university teaching, or humanitarian work.
Jonathan Kuhr, Long Island University
Jonathan Kuhr is a senior at Long Island University.  He is a member of the University Honors Program with majors in political science and jazz music.  An active participant in the Campus Activities Program, he has worked on voter registration drives, blood drives, cultural celebrations and university orientation.  He is also a committed jazz pianist, composer and on-air DJ.  For his first summer, Jonathan interned with the Rubin Museum of Art: Art of the Himalayas.   Jonathan spent his second summer doing research for the Pratt Center for Community Development on building a network of not-for-profits in New York. Jonathan is interning at Asha in New Delhi, India for his third Watson summer. Jonathan is considering vocations in the fields of music or public service and law.
Shivanie Latchman, The City College of New York
Shivanie Latchman is a senior in the CUNY Honors College at The City College of New York. She is a staff writer for City College's student newspaper, The Campus, and is the founder of CCNY's book club. She is interested in politics and science and enjoys playing traditional Indian music. During her first summer, Shivanie interned at the Institute of International Education working for the Scholar Rescue Fund. For her second summer, Shivanie worked at the Trickle Up Program to reduce poverty through providing seed funding and business training for micro enterprise. For her third summer, Shivanie is interning with Save the Children in Ethiopia.
Jihye Lee, Pace University
Jihye Lee is a senior and member of the Pforzheimer Honors College, majoring in political science at Pace University.  Born in Korea and active in the Korean community, she plans a career as a politician or lawyer devoted to community service.  Through Pace she is establishing a Peer Court at South Jamaica as a community based partnership to provide an alternative to the juvenile justice system and engage youths in improving their communities.  For her first summer, Jihye interned with the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development. Jihye worked at Trickle Up during her second summer. Trickle Up helps disadvantaged people around the world work their way out of poverty. For her third summer, Jihye is interning at the Legal Resources Center in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Tien-Der Luo, Brooklyn College
Tien-Der Luo is a member of the Honors Academy of Brooklyn College and also a senior.  He won a leadership award in high school for his work with the National Honor Society and in college has become an officer in the Progeny Vision tutoring center, working among immigrant students in the Kensington community of Brooklyn. His experience in building communication within organizations has led him to plan a major in psychology or accounting in order to pursue vocations in these fields.  For his first summer, Tien-Der worked with the Central Park Conservancy. Tien-Der spent his second summer as an accounting intern at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Tien is interning at The Conference Board in Hong Kong for his third Watson summer.
Alexander Perkins, Brooklyn College
Alexander Perkins is a junior at Brooklyn College with interests in philosophy, journalism, and international affairs.  He returned from a four year tour of duty in the armed forces in Afghanistan with military honors.  Alex has volunteered at a shelter for abused women, at the Brooklyn Public Library, and in tutoring adolescents in his community.  For his first summer, Alex interned with the Citizens Union’s Gotham Gazette.   During his second Watson summer Alex worked at the New York office of Senator Hillary Clinton. Alex is interning at Save the Children in Washington, D.C. for his third Watson summer. With deep conviction about international peace, he plans a career as a philosophy teacher or diplomat.
Kendra Pierre, Lehman College
Kendra Pierre is a junior interested in sociology and economics.  She is very active at Lehman College as a member of the College Senate and as a journalist with a weekly column in the Meridian.  On campus she has taken particular interest in tuition issues, while off campus she works with a tutoring program to improve children’s literacy and mathematical skills.  For her first summer, Kendra worked with the Citizens Union’s Gotham Gazette.     Kendra spent her second summer as an economic intern at the Conference Board, a major economic research organization. For her third Watson summer, Kendra is interning with the M.V. Foundation in Hyderabad, India. Kendra is preparing for a career as a socio-economic researcher or professor.
Jessenia Vazcones, Queens College
Jessenia Vazcones is a junior at Queens College majoring in political science.   Deeply committed to immigrant rights issues, she has interned in the Queens College chapter of the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG).  She serves as Issue Head for the Queens College Consumer Rights Campaign concentrating on Spanish speaking services.  For her first summer, Jessenia interned with the New York State Supreme Court.   Her second summer was spent doing research on New York immigrant communities at the Pratt Center for Community Development. For her third Watson summer, Jessenia is interning at the Institute of International Education in Budapest. Jessenia plans a career as a lawyer and perhaps politician.
Catherine Zinnel, Hunter College
Catherine Zinnel is a junior at Hunter College with interests in political science and urban affairs.  A University Scholar in the CUNY Macauley Honors College, she has also been elected as Chair of the Community Service Committee at Hunter.  Community service has been an integral part of her life since high school, where she organized weekend retreats for teens, taught basketball to children with Down Syndrome, and served with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) weekly soup kitchen.  For her first summer, Catherine interned with the Department of Government and External Affairs of Channel Thirteen/WNET New York.  For her second summer, Catherine did economic research for the Pratt Center for Community Development. Catherine is interning at the M.V. Foundation in Hyderabad, India for her third Watson summer. She is preparing for a career in law, journalism, city planning or non-profit work.
