FELLOWS, CLASS OF 2011

Tyler Alterman, Hunter College
A second year student at Hunter College, Tyler Alterman is pursuing a major in media studies and is interested in becoming a creative director. He is a Hunter Undergraduate Student Government senator and a freshman representative at the Macaulay Honors College University Scholars Council. Tyler also does freelance graphic design for the Women’s Rights Coalition, The Greener Apple Sustainability Blog, and the Roosevelt Institution. In high school, Tyler was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of a humor magazine, The Scallion. He is an Eagle Scout with a dedication to community service, and he has interests in a variety of arts including writing, composing, and visual design. This summer, he is interning at DonorsChoose.
Caroline Craig, Pace University
Caroline Craig is a first year student at Pace University, where she has plans to major in environmental studies and minor in political science. She has worked for the Lower East Side Ecology Center and The Fund for Public Interest, for which she solicited donations and memberships for Environment NY. In high school, she was president of several clubs including the Environmental Club, the Human Rights Club, and the Photography club. She also played JV softball and volunteered for community service in New Orleans, West Virginia, the Bronx, and her hometown, Carmel, NY. Last summer, she travelled through Western Europe, and for her first Watson summer, she is working with the Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo.
Damala Denny, Long Island University
A Brooklyn native, Damala Denny is a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, where she was part of the Student Government Organization, founder and President of the Double-Dutch Club, and a participant on a debate team. She is currently a first year student at Long Island University, where she is interested in studying English and political science in pursuit of a career in law. Damala is a volunteer at a soup kitchen in Brooklyn, as well as the Cobble Hill Senior Citizens’ Home. In the past, she has worked for the Blue Ridge Firm and at Cleary Gottlieb, Steen, & Hamilton. This summer, she is interning at The Studio Museum of Harlem.
Javeria Hashmi, Brooklyn College
Born in Pakistan and raised in New York City, Javeria Hashmi graduated from Edward R. Murrow High School and is now a second year student a Brooklyn College. Javeria is interested in a career as an immigration attorney or high school teacher, and as such, she is pursuing a double major in political science and education. In high school, Javeria was involved with the Council for Unity club which emphasized diversity, and raised money for Darfur, Toys for Tots, and Homeless shelters. Javeria was a member of SING!, for which she designed and made costumes for its annual musical, and she competed in a high school level mock trial in Moot Court. Last summer, Javeria studied abroad in Istanbul. Her first Watson internship is with the IIE Global Leaders Program.
Jocelyne Jeannot, Lehman College
Jocelyne Jeannot is a second year student at Lehman College, where she is studying political science and mass communications. For the past two years, Jocelyne has participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and she has been a volunteer for New York Cares since 2004. Jocelyne is also the three-time winner of the Tavern on the Green Annual Hat Competition, for which she designs and makes her own elaborate and artistic hats. She is a Lehman College Representative of the Macaulay Honors College University Scholars Council, and a student communications Intern at the Honors College, for which she organizes and advertises a variety of cross-campus events. She is a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in New York. For her first Watson summer, she is interning at the Central Park Conservancy.
Alex Kane, Marymount Manhattan College
Alex Kane has interests in journalism, activism, and civil rights law, and he is currently studying political science, international studies, and sociology as a second year student at Marymount Manhattan College. Alex is a member of the Indymedia U.S. editorial collective, as well as the web administrator of nyc.indymedia.org, and a reporter, writer, blogger, and volunteer for the Indypendent, a New York City-based newspaper. He has volunteered with Food Not Bombs, taught as a substitute teacher at Battery Park City Day Nursery, and worked in nursery care at Trinity Church on Wall Street. At Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, New York, Alex was President of Students United for Cultural Awareness. Last summer, he traveled to Denver to report on protests surrounding the Democratic National Convention, and this summer, he is interning at the Gotham Gazette.
Brian Kateman, College of Staten Island
A second year student at the College of Staten Island, Brian Kateman is studying biology and psychology, with aspirations to be a professor, a psychologist, or a conservation biologist. Brian is a Macaulay Honors College Ambassador, a teaching volunteer at the American Museum of Natural History, a Macaulay Honors College biology tutor, a Macaulay Honors College Outward Bound Orientation Group Leader, a food pantry volunteer at Project Hospitality, and a peer educator at the College of Staten Island Wellness and Health Center. Last summer, Brian volunteered as a teacher and guidance counselor assistant at Lillian Raskins High School. He is interning at Echoing Green for his first Watson summer.
Michael Maslankowski, College of Staten Island
Michael Maslankowski has strong interests in film and writing. He is a cinema studies and English double major at the College of Staten Island, where he is currently a second year student. Outside of his academic work, Michael is a College of Staten Island orientation leader, and a CSI student mentor for the Office of New Student Orientation/CLUE/Pluralism & Diversity. Michael is also an Adult Day Service student mentor for the Melissa Riggio Higher Education Program. In pursuit of his film interests, Michael was the production assistant for the independent documentary, “To A Man,” sponsored by the Council of Arts and Humanities for Staten Island. Michael is working at the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs this summer.
Christine Pigott, Brooklyn College
Christine Pigott is a second year student at Brooklyn College, where she is pursuing a double major in computer science and television & radio. She aspires to be a director/producer of film, an entrepreneur, or an FBI agent. In high school, Christine participated in SING, the Stepping for the Step team, and the poetry club as an editor. Currently, Christine is a black belt student and instructor of Ronin Shotokan Karate, a musician in a steel band, and a member of the Brooklyn College Television Club, Chess Club, NBSSO, and CSU. She is also the events coordinator for the Academic Club Association, and an Ambassador for the Bridges to Computing program. This summer, she is interning at the Rubin Museum of Art.
Lorendra Pinder, Pace University
A second year student at Pace University, Lorendra Pinder is pursuing possible majors in English literature, women and gender studies, and political science, with an interest in a possible career in international and human rights law or international journalism. Lorendra is a writer and editor of Pace’s literary magazine, Aphros, a debater with Model United Nations, and an Orientation Leader during freshman and transfer orientations. She is also a tutor at the Writing Center and volunteers as a reading, English, and GED instructor at The Door, a youth community center. Last summer she traveled to Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa with a Pace University political science class, and this summer she is working with Ford Motor Company’s International Fellowship at the 92nd Street Y.
Eric Polanco, The City College of New York
Eric Polanco is a first year student at The City College of New York, where he is interested in tudying media and communication arts and creative writing in pursuit of a variety of possible careers including screenwriting, film directing, video editing, journalism, education, and politics. In his high school, Eric founded and led a poetry club which published the poetry of his peers. He also filmed and edited a documentary about the Highbridge, and tutored his peers in English and Spanish. Eric was the valedictorian of his class at C.A.R.E.S. high school. He is spending his first Watson summer interning with Scenarios USA.
Ilya Ryvin, Brooklyn College
A film production major with interests in anthropology and archaeology, Ilya Ryvin aspires to be a director, editor, producer, and educator. He is currently a second year student at Brooklyn College. A graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, Ilya has been a member of Key Club International, Progressive Student Awareness group, and Future Business Leaders of America, of which he was also a founder. Ilya has written several screenplays and was once cast as an extra for the television show, “Fringe.” Last summer, Ilya volunteered at SLQC Diagnostic and Treatment Center, and this summer, he is with the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
Bing Shao, The City College of New York
Bing Shao is pursuing a double major in Biology and English at The City College of New York. She is interested in exploring possible careers as a writer, doctor, teacher, psychologist, and singing instructor. In her time as an undergraduate, Bing has been a workshop leader for the General Chemistry sequence at CCNY, Vice-President of Sustainable CCNY, mentor of the Science Club, volunteer in Costa Rica during the winter of 2008, a Cook at Siu’s Chinese Restaurant, volunteer at KittyKind Shelter, and volunteer for New York Cares. In high school, she was President of the PreMed Club, captain of the Animal Room, writer for Biology Journal, research Assistant at Weill Medical College, and founder of the Helping Hand Food Distribution Organization in Harlem. Bing is working with Global Kids during her first Watson summer.
Sushanta Singha, Lehman College
Sushanta Singha is a first year economics and political science major at Lehman College. Born in Bangladesh and graduate of Manhattan Center for Science and Math, Sushanta has strong interests in both the sciences and the arts. At Lehman, he is the freshman class representative of the Macaulay Honors College University Scholars Council, and also a participant of the Capoeira Club. In high school, Sushanta was captain of his cross country, indoor, and outdoor track teams, and a member of the Desi Club. He volunteered with organizations like Special Olympics and Top Soccer, and also serviced the Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple. This summer, he is interning at IIE Scholar Rescue Fund.
Julianne Willis, Marymount Manhattan College
Julianne Willis is interested in studying political science and international studies at Marymount Manhattan College, in pursuit of a career as a human rights lawyer or women’s rights lawyer and advocate against domestic violence. Prior to her time at Marymount Manhattan, Julianne was a student at Kingsborough Community College, where she served as the Student World Assembly Chapter President and organized many campus-wide activities including a Campus Clean-Up, an Eyes Wide Open event, and a Women-for-Women International Used Book Sale. Julianne also initiated and led a semester-long “Campaign Against Poverty,” and served as a student mentor for fellow students. Last summer, Julianne attended the Long Island University Global College Summer Program in Costa Rica, and for her first Watson summer, she is working for the Scholars at Risk Network.

Alane Celeste, Long Island University
In her third year at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus, Alane Celeste hopes to major in Media Arts/Communication with a minor in Spanish. She is in the LIU Honors Program and supported both by the LIU Higher Education Opportunity Program and an LIU Incentive Scholarship Award. Having spent some of her youth in the Dominican Republic, she is bilingual in Spanish and English. Her major volunteer activity is to serve as a tutor in academic subjects to 15-18 year old in-crisis youth in Brooklyn. She aspires to a career in marketing or advertising. Alane spent her first Watson summer as an intern in the Education Department at the Studio Museum in Harlem. This summer, she is interning at The Bronx Defenders.
Eileen DeLeon, The City College of New York
Eileen DeLeon is a third year student at The City College of New York. She is an English major and is working towards a career in the publishing industry. Eileen is Editor of The Campus, the website coordinator of Relay for Life of City College, and a member of the CCNY Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, an International English Honor Society. She is also a Writing Consultant at the CCNY Writing Center. In the past, Eileen has volunteered at community service organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Hope Kitchen at St. Gabriel’s Church, and Midnight Run. For her first Watson summer, Eileen interned at Echoing Green, an organization that provides seed money to social entrepreneurs. For her second, she is interning with The Conference Board.
Joseph Eastman, Hunter College
A third year student at Hunter College and CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College, Joseph Eastman is pursuing a double major in political science and economics and is interested in public service, government, and law. In 2007, he interned for Congressman Weiner’s District Office, and he is currently a New York Office Intern for the New York State Democratic Committee. Joseph is the Founder, President, and Administrative Director of the Roosevelt Institution at Hunter College. He is the Treasurer of the United Nations Student Association / Model United Nations Debate Team, the Secretary of the Student Political Science Association, a Student Senator, and a member of the Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee. For his first summer, Joseph interned at the New York City Department of Parks, and this summer, he is with the NYC Department of Small Business Services.
Ansamma James, Lehman College
A graduate of Aquinas High School in the Bronx, Ansamma James is a third year student at Lehman College, where she is President and Co-Founder of the College Students Coalition, an organization bringing Lehman students together for community service projects. “Sammy” has considerable community service experience, having volunteered at Residential Womens’ Shelter, served as a private tutor for foster children, and worked as a student counselor. She plans to major in psychology and business administration, and she hopes to found her own Charter School after college. Her first Watson summer was spent at the Beth Israel Cancer Center. She interned at the Bronx Defenders for her second summer.
Herby Jeanty, Pace University
Born in Haiti, Herby Jeanty is a third year student at Pace University with a major in biology. From 2003 to 2006, Herby was a Food Service Specialist in the United States Marine Corps. His military awards include the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and a Combat Action Ribbon. Herby is a member of the Tribeta Honor Society, the Pace Pre-Medical Organization, the Caribbean Students Association, and the Haitian Students Association. After college, Herby plans to attend medical school and become an orthopedic surgeon. He spent his first Watson summer as an intern at Beth Israel Cancer Center. He is working at the Center for Orthopedic Research at Columbia University this summer.
William Leverett, Queens College
William Leverett is a current second year student at Queens College with an interest in international studies, urban studies, and political science. William is also interested in music and composition and is a member of the Queens College Wind Ensemble. He is a church youth usher and lay reader at St. Albans Congregational Church and a member of the Queens College Black Student Union. William currently works as an Office Assistant at the Center for Preparatory Studies in Music at Queens College. He is an Eagle Scout and is interested in possible careers as a musician, a composer, a political representative, or a teacher. William interned at the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development during his first Watson summer. He is interning with YearUp New York for his second.
Jeffrey Lewis, Marymount Manhattan College
Jeffrey Lewis is a third year student at Marymount Manhattan College, with a major in communications and minors in photography and graphic design. He is a slam poet and has competed with great success in the Annual Chicago Teen Poetry Slam and the Annual National Poetry Slam in both 2004 and 2005. At Marymount, Jeffrey is an Institutional Advancement Phone-a-thon Coordinator, an Orientation Leader, a Peer Mentor, the Design Editor of The C Magazine, an Admission’s Assistant, and the Layout Artist and Designer of The Marymount Manhattan Review. In the summer of 2007, he worked at The University of Chicago’s John Crerar Library. During his first Watson summer, Jeffrey was a business development intern at the Central Park Conservancy. For his second, he is working with CooperKatz & Company, Inc.
Marina Malomud, Brooklyn College
Born in Kharkov, Ukraine, Marina Malomud graduated from Midwood High School in Brooklyn, and is now a third year student at Brooklyn College. She is planning to major in economics. In the past, Marina has interned at Maimonides Hospital, been a private tutor of mathematics, English, creative writing, and physics, volunteered as a Patient Aide at DaVita Inc., and taught SAT preparation for The Princeton Review. This past winter, she studied the Spanish language at Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata in Argentina. Marina aspires to a career in economic public policy, law, or acadamia. She interned at The Conference Board for her first Watson summer, and for her second, she is interning at Hughes Hubbard & Reed.
Peter Michalakis, Hunter College
Having grown up in Brooklyn, Peter Michalakis graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before enrolling at Hunter College, where he is a second year student pursuing possible majors in political science or journalism. Peter is also interested in computer science and basketball, and has participated in various local basketball tournaments and leagues, including the JCH Intramural League, the Leif Ericsson Summer League, and the Regina Poris Open. Since 2005, he has worked as a Parts Consultant at Bay Ridge Service Honda and Volvo. Peter aspires to possible careers in broadcast journalism, politics, investigative reporting, and law. He spent his first Watson summer interning at Scenarios USA. He is interning with Justice Yates at the New York State Supreme Court this summer.
Alexa Mieses, The City College of New York
Alexa Mieses has strong interests in the sciences, with a planned major in biology and minor in psychology and aspirations for a career as a physician with a focus on public heath. She is currently a third year student at The City College of New York. Alexa is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and she is affiliated with the Minority Association for Pre-health Students and the Student National Medical Association. She is also a former competitive tap dancer. Alexa is employed by the City College Academy for Professional Preparation and by the Champion Learning Center, and she volunteers for Dr. Jennifer Walden, M.D. For her first Watson summer, she interned at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s summer program for children at the Bronx Zoo. For her second summer, she is interning with Gay Men's Health Crisis.
Sasha Paulino, College of Mount Saint Vincent
Sasha Paulino is currently a third year student at College of Mount Saint Vincent, pursuing a double major in history and education. She has worked as an art teacher for the Jewish Community Center’s enrichment program in Scarsdale, as a head counselor at the Children’s Aid Society Wagon Road Day Camp in Chappaqua, and as an intern with Jacobi Medical Center. Sasha has volunteered at Midnight Run in the Bronx and at the YMCA of the Greater New York as a Youth Counselor. She is interested in a career as an elementary school teacher, a social studies professor, or an art teacher. Sasha spent her first Watson summer interning at the New-York Historical Society. This summer, she is with the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
Blaire Porter, Long Island University
Born in Seattle, Blaire Porter is a third year student at Long Island University, pursuing possible majors in psychology, history, and/or education. Since the fall of 2006, she has been a pitcher for the Long Island University softball team, and as a freshman, she was the second-team pitcher in the Northeastern conference. Every week, Blaire volunteers to talk with and care for a Holocaust survivor. During the past three summers, she has also volunteered at the R.O.O.T.S. Homeless Shelter in Seattle, Washington, where she prepared and served food to the homeless. For her first Watson Summer, Blaire interned at the Facing History School, and for her second, she is interning at Urban Pathways.
Rosemary Taveras, Brooklyn College
Rosemary Taveras is pursuing a major in psychology and is interested in a possible career as a high school guidance counselor. A third year student at Brooklyn College, she is active as a member of the Campus Ministry, the Jovenes De Valor Youth Group, the Right-to-Life Club, the Spanish Club, the “Jornada de Vida Cristiana” Youth Group, the Junior/Senior Chorus, and the Sons and Daughters Encounter Youth Group. Rosemary is a volunteer with the Grace House Organization. She has worked as a counselor for the Joseph P. Kennedy Center in Harlem, a receptionist for St. Elizabeth’s Parish Rectory, and a College Assistant at Brooklyn College’s Office of Communications. Rosemary interned at The Studio Museum in Harlem for her first Watson summer. She is interning with the Martina Arroyo Foundation this summer.
Jonathan Vazcones, Queens College
Jonathan Vazcones is a second year student at Queens College and an aspiring economics and philosophy double-major. He hopes to pursue a career as an economist working to affect and advise policy change, but his interests also include jazz music and long distance running. At Queens College, he is a member of the Political Science Club and a delegate for the Queens College United Nations Club. He is also an Advantage Coach, tutoring children at the Score! Educational Center. During his first Watson summer, Jonathan interned at the Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund. For his second summer, Jonathan is interning at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.
Olivia Anne Warren, Marymount Manhattan College
Olivia Warren was born in Racine, Wisconsin, and she is a second year student at Marymount Manhattan College pursuing possible majors in dance and political science and possible careers as a dancer, a choreographer, a politician, or a neurologist. She is a Freshman Representative on the MMC Dance Board of Representatives and a member of the MMC Residence Hall Council and the MMC Go Green Coalition. For her first Watson summer, Olivia interned at the Gotham Gazette, a daily newspaper of the Citizen's Union. This summer, she is interning in the Office of Congressman Jose Serrano.
Lindsay White, The City College of New York
Lindsay White is a third year student at the City College of New York, and she is from Cooperstown, New York. Her experience working for two months at a residential psychiatric treatment program for children in New Hampshire and her recreation therapy volunteer work at the New York State Psychiatric Institution reflect her strong interest in clinical psychology. She also worked as an Au Pair in Sitges, Spain, while she was in high school. She is considering majors in psychology and political science and anticipates a career either in clinical psychology or social work. Lindsay’s first Watson internship was spent at the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development. For her second Watson summer, Lindsay interned with Justice Yates at the New York State Supreme Court.
Carla Whyte, Lehman College
Carla Whyte is currently a third year student at Lehman College. She is pursuing majors in sociology and political science with a possible minor in French. Carla is a founding member of the Black Legacy Club and a cheerleader at Lehman women's and men's basketball games and in annual CUNY-wide competitions. She is in the Lehman Scholars program and is the recipient of the Lehman College Foundation Scholarship. Carla is also a research assistant in the department of sociology and a senior page at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. Carla spent her first Watson summer interning at the United Nations Population Fund. For her second, she is interning with Hughes Hubbard & Reed.
Michael Young, College of Staten Island
Michael Young is a third year student at the College of Staten Island and CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College. He is pursuing a career as a writer, educator, and artist. Michael is intending to major in American studies with a minor in studio art, and on campus he is a Student Ambassador and also a Career Mentor for the Career and Scholarship Center Pathfinder Program. He created the weekly comic strips "The Flipside" and "Roommates" for the Staten Island Advance daily newspaper. Michael is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Operation Three-Legged Dolphin humor magazine. In the past, he has been an Editorial Intern for Marvel Comics and an art teacher for the Staten Island Mental Health Society. Michael spent his first Watson summer interning at Global Kids, a program assisting urban youth to become successful students and community leaders. For his second summer, he is interning at the New York City Department of Parks.

Molly Rose Avila, Hunter College
Molly Rose Avila is a senior at Hunter College with an interest in political philosophy, Russian literature, and cultural history.  Molly Rose is a Thomas Hunter Honors Scholar,  She has been Fiction editor of the Hunter Literary magazine.  In summer 2005 she was a Global Volunteer at an orphanage in Lima, Peru.  During high school, she won a theatre performance award for consistently outstanding work.  During her first summer, Molly Rose interned with the education department of The Studio Museum in Harlem.  Having spent her junior spring semester in France, Molly Rose spent her second Watson summer working the Scholars at Risk Network.  For her third summer, Molly Rose will volunteer at Kitezh in Russia. She looks forward to a career exploring connections between culture and history as a professor, writer, or human rights worker.
Brian Bonci, Pace University
A third year undergraduate at the Pforzheimer Honors College of Pace University-Manhattan, Brian Bonci was Vice President of the Freshman Class. He intends to major in political science with a minor in Spanish. He has been an intern in the office of New York State Senate Minority Leader, Malcolm Smith. In January and February 2007, Brian worked on the special election campaign of New York State Senator Craig Johnson. During his high school years in upstate New York, he held a number of leadership positions in the 4-H Program. Brian spent his first Watson summer at the Gotham Gazette, a daily newspaper of the Citizen’s Union. He spent his second summer interning at Gay Men's Health Crisis, and will for his third summer be interning at AMIDEAST in Tunisia.
Alvin Bradbury, The City College of New York
Alvin Bradbury is a fourth year student at The City College of New York, majoring in international studies and political science. Alvin grew up in Jamaica, though he attended high school in Flushing, Queens, where he was actively involved in a model United Nations teams, an interest he has continued at CCNY.  He spent his first Watson summer doing research for the Scholars at Risk Network. For his second summer, he interned at the Bronx Defenders. His third summer will be spent interning at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice in Ghana. He plans to attend law school after his graduation and hopes to work in the field of human rights.
Mikaela Chase, Lehman College
Mikaela Chase is a fourth year student at the Macaulay Honors College at Lehman College, City University of New York, with a double major in anthropology and art history. She is a member of three student government bodies at Lehman, including a position as Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee. Mikaela has worked at the NYU Millhauser Labs as a research assistant for aging and dementia. Her diverse interests have taken her to 7 countries thus far, including a summer studying in Mexico and a demonstrating position in the 2004 World Culture Open in South Korea. A Horace W. Goldsmith Scholar and National Dean's List student in 2007, Mikaela spent her first Watson summer at Rubin Museum of Art, which specializes in the art of the Himalayas. She spent her second summer interning in External Affairs at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. For her third summer, Mikaela will be interning at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.
Nick Copeli, Queens College
Nick Copeli is a senior and member of CUNY Macauley Honors College at Queens College. Educated first in a yeshiva, he joined an Israeli/Palestine mediation program in public high school and became interested in anthropology to understand differing perspectives on public issues.  He was also a competitive swimmer and orator for the Moot Court team, as well as a volunteer in a nursing home and soup kitchen.  In college he plans to major in anthropology as preparation for a career in medicine and public health.  For his first summer, Nick interned with Global Kids, an organization dedicated to preparing urban youth for global citizenship. Nick is the first Queens College student to be chosen to participate in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s Humanities and Medicine Program. During his second Watson summer Nick worked at DonorsChoose, an organization that brings together donors with projects to improve public education. His third summer will be spent in Chile, volunteering with VE Global.
Aaron Gavin, Brooklyn College
A fourth year student at Brooklyn College, Aaron Gavin is planning a double major in political science and in the philosophy of law. Aaron has worked for Congressman Edolphus Towns, has been a project leader at the Small Claims Action Center of New York Public Research Group, has served as Vice President of Hillel at Brooklyn College, and has been a Hebrew School Teacher and a volunteer assisting mentally disabled people. He hopes for a career in politics, law, or academic political science. Aaron spent his first summer doing research for the Scholar Rescue Fund’s World Report. For his second summer, he interned at CooperKatz & Company, Inc. His third summer will be spent in India, working with the MV Foundation.
Maria Gonzalez, Queens College
Maria Gonzalez is a fourth year student at Queens College majoring in history with a minor in secondary education. In high school, she was a varsity swimmer and member of the varsity track team. She also organized the first Spanish literary magazine at her high school, while participating in a number of charity activities for the March of Dimes, Relay for Life, Meals on Wheels, and others. She aspires to a career as a teacher or professor, or, possibly, a museum curator. Maria spent her first Watson summer at the New-York Historical Society. Her second summer was spent interning with the Program Services department at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and her third summer will be spent with the Hilda Rothschild Foundation in El Salvador.
Alexandra Gratereaux, Long Island University
Born in the Dominican Republic, Alexandra Gratereaux graduated from Miami Beach High School in Florida before enrolling at Long Island University where she is a third year student. She pursued her strong interests in journalism and photography in two internships while she was in high school as a writer-photographer at the Miami Sun Post and then as a staff photojournalist at the Miami Herald. Not surprisingly, she expects to major in print journalism and photography at LIU. Extending her interest in photojournalism to film, Alexandra spent her first Watson summer at Scenarios USA, an organization that uses writing and film-making to foster youth leadership and advocacy. She spent her second Watson summer interning at Crain's Business Weekly. For her third summer, Alexandra will intern at Hoops for Hope in Cape Town.
Aniqa Islam, Queens College
Aniqa Islam, a fourth year student at Queens College, was born in Bangladesh. She is a graduate of Martin Van Buren High School where she was President of the Muslim Students Association. At Queens College, she is Vice President of Students for a Free Society, Co-Founder of the Coca Cola Abuses Protest Campaign, and active both in the Queens chapter of the Model United Nations and the Academic Senate. She aspires to work either at the United Nations, a non-governmental organization involved in humanitarian activities, or, perhaps, a career as a writer. Aniqa spent her first J.K. Watson summer at the United Nations Population Fund. For her second summer, she interned at New York City Global Partners, Inc. Aniqa's third summer will be spent with The Conference Board in New York.
Talia Krevsky, Hunter College
Talia Krevsky is a Brooklyn native who attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School before enrolling at Hunter College and CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College where she is in her third year. She is a political activist with the Future Voters of America Party, the Social Action Club, and Undergraduate Student Government at Hunter. Her possible career interests include human rights activism, acting, journalism, or teaching. Talia spent her first Watson summer at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s summer program for children at the Bronx Zoo. She spent her second summer interning at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Her third summer will be with Idealist.org in Argentina.
Nicole Lebenson, Brooklyn College
A fourth year student at Brooklyn College and CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College, Nicole Lebenson is a reporter for the Brooklyn College newspaper, The Excelsior, plays in the softball club and is a member of the Honors Academy Art Committee. She is in charge of an archiving program at the Union Synagogue in Brooklyn where she is making efforts to preserve, document, collect, and exhibit documents and artifacts in the Temple’s collection. She is considering majors in English and history, with a minor in archival studies and community documentation. Nicole spent her first Watson summer working with the Ford Motor Company’s International Fellowship at the 92nd Street Y. For her second summer, she interned at Sesame Workshop. Nicole's third Watson summer will be spent interning at the International Institute of Education in Mexico City.
Anusha Mehar, College of Mount Saint Vincent
The College of Mount Saint Vincent’s first Jeannette K. Watson Fellow, Anusha Mehar is a third year student interested in international relations, English, and history. While in high school in Cornwall, New York, she helped a church providing food to homeless people, volunteered for United for Peace and Justice, and was a companion to a sick elderly woman. Before enrolling at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Anusha was a volunteer English teacher to young children in Thailand. For her first Watson summer, Anusha worked at the International Coalition of Historic Site Museums of Conscience. She worked at the Acumen Fund for her second.
Valerio Russo, Lehman College
Valerio Russo is a fourth year student at Lehman College and the Macaulay Honors College of CUNY. Valerio was born in Italy. He is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, where he was on the Boys Varsity Volleyball Team and Manager of the Girls Volleyball Team. He has tutored both young people and adults in Italian, computing, and algebra. Aspiring to a career in international affairs, Valerio is contemplating majoring in both political science and history. The Gotham Gazette, a daily newspaper published by the Citizens’ Union, was the site of Valerio’s first J.K. Watson summer internship. His second summer was with the New York City Department of Small Business Services. For his third summer, Valerio will travel to Cape Town to intern with Hoops for Hope.
Long Tran, Hunter College
Born in Vietnam, Long Tran graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before enrolling at Hunter where he is a fourth year student. He has engaged in a great deal of community service activity, including work with a physical education and recreation program for children and adults with disabilities, mentoring of after school children, and work in a soup kitchen and a nursing home. He interned with the New York Public Interest Research Group as a project leader of the environmental group, and he worked one summer for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. His career interests are in law, public policy, and politics. Long worked at Global Kids during his first Watson summer. During his second, he interned at The Conference Board. For his third summer, Long will and her third summer will intern with the Hilda Rothschild Foundation in El Salvador.
